Neither the temp nor the fuel gauge work on my instrument cluster. All the wiring is new. The battery light works but when I turn on the headlights the speedometer doesn't light up either. Is there anyway to test them or replace them. How can I determine what the problem is. On newer cars the light switch turns and is a dimmer, turning the light switch didn't seem to make the lights for the cluster come on either. The fun never stops with this old beast!
Yep, they sure are fun! I would start out by testing the main power and ground to the cluster and the headlight switch. You probably have several different issues going on here. The gauges could very well be a bad ground.
Its not uncommon for the instrument light dimmer part of the headlight switch to get a little flaky over time and not work. Try jiggling and twisting around on it a bit. the headlight switch is alot easier to work with if you take it out of the dash. To do that you have to pull the **** out to the parking light position, then reach around and feel on the body of the switch for a small pin that can be pushed in. Push it in while pulling the **** out. The **** should come all the way out allowing you to unscrew the bezel holding it to the dash.
Now you can work on it without standing on your head.
There is a small junction block @ the bottom of the back side if the cluster, below the Speedo & if that is Loose or not connected or bad, your Gauges will not work.
