How many miles can someone expect out of a PS? I pull a boat occasionally and were only talking about 2500#. Other than that its a mix of city and hwy driving.
my dad's got one at work with just shy of half a million. 97 f250 xcab 2wd auto. 3rd tranny, just rebuilt the top end. they beat the life out of their vehicles (hes a rigger). usually got a full transfer tank plus about 1000# cribbing and other items. it's my ride when i work with him n it runs exceptionally well for that many miles IMHO.
If you are looking for fuel milage, it depends on the gears, the tires, the load, and your foot. My trucks get anywhere from 10 to 18. Depends on the load and the driver. They are all work trucks. I hear others doing better.
If you want to know about life of the engine, it depends a great deal on how you take care of it. They can die at 80k or go to 400k. Do you just drive around or race it.
My '97 has 110K on her. My rig is so stock, I still have the stock air box. Even the tires are stock size replacements. I'm the second owner and haven't added anything other than a camper-shell.
Mileage has been a best of 16.5 mpg on the highway with combined city/highway driving in the 15.75 mpg range.
Mine has around 215K used and abused, BADLY. i bought the truck from my uncle, not the smartest guy out there. he was pulling a 20k trailer every day almost. lets put it this way, he was pulling so much weight he broke 2 trailers in half! a 5th wheel enclosed trailer! but he was smart enough to change fluids in her. and now i have it. that truck gets beat and beat and beat and BEAT. i have gone through 8 back tires already and i need 4 more very very soon. the key thing is change oil!!!! and the things will last you forever. i hope to get 500k out of this truck. and i bet it will make it there with the abuse i give it. as far as milage, i get 16.5MPG highway with a 4:10 LS rear end and 11 city with a chip in it.
i think i can say it will be the best most reliable truck i will ever own. dont be scared to buy a high milage PSD!
Mitch
Not to brag....'99PSD A/T, 735000 miles, motor and trans never been worked on internally. MPG=~17,highway speeds70mph, ~11,towing@62.5mph. I am running with superchip installed in mid position.
Tommy,
Thats what I was hoping for. How often do you change the tranny fluid? What kind of oil do you run in it and how often do you change? Do you tow much?
Thanks everybody for the responses. This is my first diesel. I bought it from my Uncle. It's perfect and had 135K when I bought it. Perfectly maintained, garage kept, etc. I was just wondering how many miles I could expect. My last two vehicles, both chevy 350's, one of them I sold with 280K miles and I still have the other it has 414K on it. Neither on of them has ever been touched. With the exception of water pump, starter etc . As you can tell I keep vehicles a long time.
I've put 5K on the PS since I got it. The first two tanks I was getting 15.5mpg. Since then the worst was 18.3 and the best was 19.8mpg. It's completely stock. I'm planning on upgrading the down tube and maybe a K&N, I know many diffrent opinions on the latter. Other than that I'm just gonna drive it. More power than I'll ever need.
I run 15-40Rotella oil and change it and filter some where after 5000-7500 miles depending when I get home. lately, I've just been dropping trans fluid out and refilling and adding Lucas additive(most of the bolts have been stripped in trans housing by the oil change specialist)at no paticular milage(ie. what kind of driving has been done). Half of my driving has been in the towing mode. I have K&N filter installed and try to keep it clean. My main complaints at the moment is that I have a couple dash lights burned out and don't know how to get to them, and also I just hit a deer and knocked it back into the field that it just came out of, minor damage done. Truck is fueled up and ready to roll.
So, you don't drop the pan and change the tranny filter? I have been told not to touch the filter. I don't know. Some people say never change t-fluid or your gonna have problems. Which, I completely aggree with, IF, the transmission has alot of miles on it without ever having the fluid changed. My uncle had a tranny put in it at 125K. I'm, thinkin about changing it twice a year. Which will be about 20K.
I was thinking about going to royal purple on the next oil change. I use lucas diesel additive. I think thats why I'm getting as good of mpg's as I am. Royal purple also makes a tranny fluid.
I just want to stay on top of it. I'll have this thing a long time. People bragging about 200K, thats nothing. I'm hoping for 750K.
I can't agree with never changing the fluid especially if the truck is working. The truck has a drain plug on it and it is very easy to drain. I'll probably chanc\ge the filter when it gets warm enough to crawl under the truck a lay there for a while.(shade tree mechanic you know).
If your auto tranny fluid has reached 250 degrees f it needs to be replaced no matter how long its been in there.
If you guys are in dusty conditions you might want to look into a different air filter. The drop in replacements are not the best at sealing or filtering. Just something to think about
15 gallons 250 miles = 16.6 mpg yes i am smiling.. figured that was pretty good considering it was through a couple mountain passes average speed was around 70 mph, also about 40 miles in 4x4, all with the hubs locked.
'95, 5 speed, 4/4. 120K. When it was new, it got 23-24 driving back and forth to work at 55 mph, mostly highway. Then dealer got hold of it for a cps replacement and I think he changed the calibration. After that, milage was 21-22 under the same conditions. If I drive 70-75 mph highway the milage drops to 20. Pulling a 2500# trailer at that speed I can expect 15-16 on level ground.
I've kept track of every tank since it was new. I don't use the brakes hardly at all. They're about half worn. Clutch works like new. I'm not hard on one at all.
