idle problems

idle problems
i have 96 explorer than was having start trouble would need to be started about 3-4 times then it would idle fine but when i put into gear it would die i would restart and everything would be fine this went on for 3-4 weeks then last nite while driving home on the interstate around 60 mph vehicle started acting like it was running out of gas hestitate, cough etc then it would act fine again.then it just died but when i pulled off the road and stopped the vehicle stared right back up idle went to 1500 then slowly came down to 1000rpm then started to idle rough then die this happen to me several times when i would start the vehicle least 15 times each time i heard the fuel pump whine for a few seconds like its suppose to but even when i tried to put into gear when idle ok or fast it would die.or hestitate cough lurch forward then die if i put gas pedal to floor it acted like not want to start smell like gas etc any ideas out there

First check for any vacuum leaks and also try cleaning the IAC.
