i have a 1990 F150 i got from an ex-coworker and i got it to pass IM and last week i was on my way home and the truck all of a sudden died on me i figured it was my alternator so i replaced it, it needed it badly, but i have an issue of the truck turning over and having a low idle and then dying. if i give it fuel it will stay alive for a lil longer until it starts to backfire in teh cylinders and cut off. ive found a vacuum line that is disconnected and had been repaired prior to me getting the truck although they used electircal tape to fix it...now i have no clue where it plugs into and i think it is my ignition vacuum advance but im not 100% sure of that conclusion. but this vacuum cable follows the vacuum lines that go to the reserve vacuum canister on the passengers side but again i see no area where it may plug into. if anyone may know anything i should check or know what my problem is please let me know ive been at this for too long. thanks
Check for scan codes, or is check engine light coming on?
Check for fuel pressure at the rail?
Any idea about the maintenance status...air filter, fuel filter, condition of the distributor cap, throttle body?
In the long run it could come down to just cleaning the throttle body really well.
Idle speed control could be involved but should be throwing a code if that is the case.
When was the oxygen sensor last changed? That's a cheap and very easy item that needs changing on regular maintenance cycle. It'll save it's price on fuel economy in the first month!
Where does that vacuum line go? Look at the EGR, and the solenoids on the valve cover or firewall. It may have gone to the smog tubes, or it may have been the EGR vacuum. The vacuum system on those is pretty simple, if the sticker is still there you can clean the grease off of the line and see where it went. They're all color coded to the diagram.
i was on the phone last night with a buddy going to UTI and i figured out that my egr valve by my throttle body is part of the issue...i took the vacuum line off of it and it ran for longer but still died...and im not sure if my check engine light is on cuz i belive the bulb is burned out...im also not fortinant enough to have a scaning tool or know anyone that has one...id take it to a shop but alaska isnt very kind in where trustworthy shops are located
