engine troubles

My truck (2.9L 90 Ranger) has always had a bad ticking sound. I used to think it was a lifter until tonight it got worse and worse until the whole truck started shaking at low speeds/low rpm. It starts kinda hard and has a horrible ticking/shake at idle. Also, when I got home, smoke was coming from the engine compartment. Any ideas

Ok don't try and run it again.

What color was the smoke? Do you see any obvious burning, leaking fluids, etc?

whitish blue smoke and no leaks or burning smell at the time, I will check more thouroughly for leaks in the morning.

I'm just taking a stab, but I'd guess a lifter collapsed due to wearing through the heel, and when collapsed it wont open the valve it's supposed to, causing a miss. Just a thought.
