89 Ranger possible transmission problem
I have just bought an 89 Ford Ranger with a 2.9l v-6 automatic trans. I was told the transmission had been rebuilt. I know the transmission guy and he does good work. It seems that the gears shift fine when giving it the gas at a quick pace. When I do a slow take off going through the gears the shifting is smooth until I reach the speed of 35mph. It thens feels like the transmission is slipping or surging. Once I speed up past 35 mph the surging stops. I was told it could be the torque converter? Any help would be appreciated.

Convertor locking/unlocking??
Try this, press on the brake pedal just enough so the brake lights come on, That will keep the convertor from locking. Any difference?
Or, what happens if you lock it in a lower gear?

One quick & simple thing that you can do is to pull the codes & see if the computer can tell you what the problem is.
I took a quick look a the list of trouble codes in my scanner manual and a code 89 "lockup solenoid circuit failure" might fit your symptoms.

BTW, have you checked with the trans shop that did the rebuild? Maybe theres some time left on the warranty.
