The December issue of Kitplanes has an article about an airplane powered by a Ford smallblock V-8. Unfortunately there is no link, in that you have to pay for an electronic subscription to read the article online.
A Lycoming 108hp, 235ci four cylinder aircooled engine and two bladed propeller were removed, and replaced with an aluminum block and head Ford 302-based V-8 displacing 360ci and three bladed propeller. Claimed horsepower is 270@3500rpm. A 360ci Lycoming would be 180@2800rpm.
Top speed increased from 175mph to 200mph on the same six gallons per hour fuel burn. Note that more than doubling power only increases top speed by 14 percent.
The downside, weight, 150lbs more. He has reduced the useful load of the plane by a whole passenger.
Yeah, but it's now Ford V8 powered. How cool is that!
I recall reading about replacing Lycoming and Continental powerplants with Porsche engines some years back. (May very well have been in Kitplanes, I used to have a subscription.)
