Cool Steering Gear Box Stinks!!!

I replaced the stearing gear box on my '92 F-350 4X4 crew cab about 15,000 miles ago. The box was new OEM. I have had it in for adjustment and have adjusted it myself to the point it has the "ghost stearing." With all of that there is still a lot of slack in the box/steering. The rest of the steering, track bar, and front end have been replaced and are tight. This is frustrating at best. I don't think this should be. I have a junker minivan with 220,00 miles on it and a whining steering pump that has better steering.

I am looking for a solution to get this close to my '99 Expedition's steering. The steering on it is great. Is there another option, aftermarket, to get this fixed? Did I get a bad box from Ford or were they allways loose? Help!!!

Well it's 14 years old. I would suspect the bushing on the steering linkage between the steering wheel and gear box are near worn. I am not sure what you mean by ghost steering, if it's bump steer you will have to do some work to remedy it.

Look at flaming rivers' catalog for some bad ideas.

Thanks for the reply. I have looked the schematics and at the steering column from the steering wheel to the gear box and can't find a bushing. I have held the steering column against the frame and at the input shaft with a pair of channel locks. There is no movement. Once I let go the play is there. With that I am certain the movement is in the box.

The adjustment I made was to the sector shaft. The allen screw on the top of the box. This made the the steering stiff to the point that after coming out of a turn the vehicle continues to the turn as if I had continued to hold the wheel. Normally the truck will straighten some on its own. Thats what I meant by ghost steering.

Any other suggestions on adjusting or replacing?

I assume you meant Flaming River has some good ideas.
