I have a 75 f250 with 390 When i turn the key I get nothing like its dead I crossed over the solenoid and the engine cranks. I have checked all grounds and cables has a new battery.Lights work Except turn signals .I have power to the switch and when i turn the switch on I have power at the coil but will not crank and no warning lights come on .Could the ignition switch be bad ? Any help would be great
Sounds like the fuse link is open at Starter Solenoid where the Battery + (POS) cable hooks on.
If you put it between both hands and pull and if it stretches it is bad.
If you look at the switch again, you should have a wire coming out of the ign switch that is the same color as the one on the "S" terminal of the solenoid. In 1976 it was red/blue. When you spring the switch over to start, you should have 12 volts on this wire coming out of th switch.
If you do have power on this wire at the switch, then I would suspect you have a bad neutral safety switch or clutch switch. This wire leaves the switch and goes to the neutral safety switch, and then to the solenoid.
Many times someone has swapped transmissions, and they forget to take care of this switch, and then it will not start. The linkage can be out of adjustment, or the switch can be bad, if this turns out to be the problem.
You were right the neutral switch was the problem I was getting 12 volts up to the switch but not after . I junped a wire before the switch and there it cranked with the key. This switch was on the bottom of the steeing column. My truck was switch over to a floor shift so cant i just bybass that safety switch or do i need to replace it? Thanks for all your help.
You can bypass it, but it will start in gear. The only time this has been a problem for me, is if I get a very thorough state inspector at the inspection station(it won't pass like this) or if I expect other people to be driving the vehicle like my 17 year old daughter. Things happen sometimes.
