Well I've done a lot of reading and I've gathered that a late 03 to an early 04 6.0 are undesirable..
Though Then I've read that if you find one of those with any decent milage on them the issues have more then likely been fixed and they should be good..
I have found an 03 with a 6.0 with 49k on it for 28k. I'm trying to decide if it's worth it. It's really clean and I test drove it, but to me it seemed kinda slow.. *shrug* maybe my expectations are to high?
if its is slow there might be something wrong with it. with 49k on the odo then it is probably still under warranty. is a dealer selling the truck or a independant? if it is a dealer, i sure they could look at it but try to make sure it is a "6.0 friendly dealer" and not a parts replacer.
That's too close to a '05 price for me from all that I've heard and read. You could be lucky, but maybe not. Also, there are some worthwhile changes starting in '05. If you plan to void your warranty with lots of mods, and they come down on the price, it might be worth it.
It's a smaller dealer that buys it's used vehicles from the major big time dealers..
They said it has a 100k warranty on it..
2 flags there, both red,
Smaller dealers usually buy trucks that are wholesaled out to auction. That means a major dealer that took it in trade didn't want to risk selling it off of their lot. May or may not be a risk.
That being said I bought a truck off of a major dealer's lot that dumped a tranny that week (Dodge, go figure) the major dealer fixed it at no cost (El Cajon Ford) when I still has issues with the truck they took it back 6 weeks later (at a small loss to me) and gave me a heck of a deal on my 6.0, you won't get that kind of service from a small lot.
Only the engine has a 100k warantee, slightly misleading of the dealer not to mention that.
They did say the engine and trans had the 100k warranty..
Well someone new to the PSD world any advice on year/motor? I'm on a tight budget.. around 26k (and I have to figure a 3k loss on my trade in) so roughly around 23-24k to spend on a truck.. Here in So cal it's hard to find a good one with lower milage..
Getting an Oasis report is the best move you can make. It'll tell you a lot about the vehicle. I also purchased used and having the info really helped; not only with the decision, but the deal as well.
Keep in mind however; it can be a bit tough getting a dealer to print one off for you if you're not listed as the official owner. Here's what I did (good, right, wrong, or indifferent). I went to the parts department and bought some Ford diesel additive (I was already committed to buying a diesel so no foul). I then walked into the service department with a smile (and package in hand) to introduce myself as a new, proud owner of a ford 6.0 and to ask a few questions about the listed 30K mile service package (yes, I did my research). The additive, along with the obvious interest in the 30K service, naturally convinced them that I was the proud owner. They printed it off for me on the spot, walked me through the entries, and even made a couple of recommendations on overdue recalls. This whole thing might sound a bit silly, but it worked like a charm.
