Those are probably "hexes." Do you have any pics?

- Double 5-Pointed Star: Morning Star, Sun and Light
- 6-Lobed Petals (Open tulips): Faith, Fertility, Safeguard from Harm
- 6-Pointed Star: Good Luck and Good Fortune, Protection from lightning, Love Star,
Perfect Marriage- 8-Pointed Star: Perseverance
- 12-Pointed Star: Rationalism and Justice
- Double Eight-Pointed Star:Fertility

They originated in the late 1700's as German immigrants.
Settleing in the Pennsylvania area around Lancaster, they became known as
"Pennsylvania Dutch" as they spoke german, which "sounded Dutch" to other residents.
I've seen a number of them in that area, some quite old. Somebody decided
they were :hex signs", and a tourist industry was born. The metal stars are just an off
shoot of the original designs
painted on the barns for good luck.

What the colors mean:
Black: Protection, also used to blend or bind elements together
Blue: Protection, peace, calmness and spirituality
Brown: Mother earth, also can mean friendship and strength
Green: Growth, fertility, success in things and ideas that grow
Orange: Abundance in career, projects and matters needing an added push
Red: Emotions, passion, charisma, lust and also creativity
Violet: Things that are sacred
White: Purity, power of the moon, allows energy to flow freely
Yellow: Health in body and mind, love of man and the sun, connection to the God
