intermitent hard start

Im new to the forum so here goes.
I've got a '88 f350 crew cab w/banks turbo and gear vendor. It has a hard starting priblem ,but only when the fuel tank i'm on is below say 3/4 full. Also seems to help since i have a slight incline to my driveway , if I back the truck in . Seems like fuel if flowig back if it sits overnight. Is this a ip prob. or possibly inj. leaking. Truck does not smoke at idle . 120,000 miles on truck/engine

I,m assuming that would be in the fuel tank? This is equiped w/dual tanks and does the same regardless of which tank im on.
thanks

fuel drainback from the filter to the fuel tank due to air intrusion in the return circuit.

very common problem with the return lines.

boat258,
Wecome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.

You are describing air intrusion problems.
The tank downhill puts more vacuum on the fuel return lines than when the tank is uphill.
Air enters the return lines and drains the fuel system.
When you try to start it, you have to crank it long enough to replace the air with fuel.

You probably have no problems starting it unless it sets overnight in the early stages.

Replace the return tee O rings and all the return lines on the engine, cost is under 30 dollars.
The O rings are available at Ford for around 1 dollar each, there are 16.
Fuel line can come from any parts store.
Since you have a turbo, I would say it will take 2 to 3 hours to do the job.

Thanks for all the input folks. I replaced o rings about a year ago but more because of worn and leakage. Seems I only did 8 though. Ill look at it more tommorow. This has been a consistant prob. Since I bought the truck 3 years ago. Not enough to keep me from driving it. Only 2wd but good mileage hauls 4/5 big adults comfortably and pulls or hauls just about anything, and rides like a caddy.
