I have a 1970 Ford F100 302 3-speed. I've had the truck for a couple of years and never got around to putting in a speedometer cable. When I got the truck it didn't have one. Anyway I buy one and hook it up to the speedometer and feed it down to the old three speed and I can't find no where to hook it up. Is there supposed to be a place on the drivers side or am I not looking in the right place?
This has got to be a stupid question but someone once told me that the only stupid question is the one you never asked.
Anyways I appreciate any help and advice you guys can give me cause in the past you have always had the answers to my questions.
fpu, I have heard the same thing. As long as I can be, I intend to be here with the great group of Ford truck owners committed to answering the ol Ford truck tech support questions others come here with.
Hotrod is on the money, you should be able to find the hole on the tail shaft.
I found the place on the transmission toward the top left side of the tail shaft or at least I think it might be. Anyways it's got something broke off in it because its flush with the tail shaft and it looks like there is a bolt hole to the side of it. Is this where it's suppose to go? And if so is it supposed to have a male threaded fitting sticking out to screw the cable on to or did they sell me the wrong cable at the parts store?
One other thing if this is the right place will I have to pull the tail shaft to replace this thing? And if I have to pull it anyways what kind of 4-speed transmission will bolt back to my stock bellhousing without having to buy a adapter. Just trying to keep it low budget as possible it there is such a thing.
I appreciate all the answers you have already given me.
On the drivers side of the tailshaft there will be a small bolt holding the speedo cable into the housing..on do the bolt and the end of the cable will pull out...If you check out my pics i put in a torino 4spd the only mod was for the floor shifter..good luck bill

Thanks Bill that is one bad truck you have with that 427 with 2 fours. I be afraid to let one of my daughers drive one with that much power because they drive too much like me or that's what my wife says. I will see if that piece will pull out of my transmission cause there's nothing holding it in. There's a place for a bolt but no bolt and no cable guess it's just the end they left broke off in it. So the end piece just slides up in the transmission instead of screwing to something. Guess I will take that cable back and swap it for the right one. Thanks again
Johnny

the end that goes into the tranny is held in with a clip. This clip is held in place with an attaching bolt. The other end which passes through the fire wall screws onto the rear of the instrument cluster. Don't forget to get the correct gear for your new cable. Hope this helps you.
I appreciate all the help from everyone I got the broke off cable end out with no problems and installed the new cable back in the truck. Job completed with the help of all you guys.
