BIG problem

Ok had a leaky radiator the other day and was under my truck lookin for the leak when i came across a more serious problem. The seal on my axle where the driveshaft connects to the axle is gone and theres oil all up on the underside of the bed and dripping down the axle housing. I talked to one of the techs at work and he said its pretty serious, and I could have done some major damage if its been off for a while. I am beginning to think that getting my truck fixed isnt worth the money anymore, seems everytime I fix one thing another thing breaks and its usually something worse. What would it take to repair it myself? and how long? I need help ASAP cuz without my truck I can not work and im afraid to drive it with this problem.

Put a seal in it and drive it till there is a problem. There may not be any problems other than needing the seal. Just need to pull the yoke and tap in a new seal if the old seal is gone. No big deal really some wrenches and a hammer you will need a bid socket that fits the yoke nut. If you fix it and it starts grinding then you have to fix a big problem but at least you will have a new seal in already. My two cents.

if you still have fluid in your rear end, you have not done any real damage yet. a seal is more work than cost. i replaced one on my son's explorer, if i remember, seal was less than $10. topped off fluid, this was 3 years ago, no propblems since.

more work is something that I do not have the time for at the moment, Im a full time student with work every day of the week so no time to get parts or put them in. That is why im just thinking its not worth the money to GET it fixed, but if I can get someone to do it cheap i probably will. Theres just so much wrong with the truck and after having it a year i get the feeling i payed 1500 dollars more than i should have on the thing. but hey when ur desperate for a truck n u dnt do your research i guess thats what happens. I ran a carfax on it at work cuz its free and the truck was inspected at so many different places around texas oklahoma, and colorado that there is no way it only has 118,000 mles on it. and I bought it from a guy from church thinking he would be honest but i guess i was wrong. sorry for blabbin on bout this it just frustrates me how i fi one thing and then something ealse goes wrong.

Yeah, that's the nature of the beast when you're drivin' an older rig. Ask me, I know - I have 8 and other than my wife's DD which is a 2001, none of them are less than 14 years old.

As for the guy at church, he may still be honest - just given bad info by the previous owner. The guy I bought mine from was shocked when I ran a carfax and showed him that the owner before him had only owned the truck a couple of years. That guy told him he had bought it from the first owner when it was only a couple of years old. In fact I'm like the 6th owner - not the 4th.

Ok took the plug off the housing on the back of the dif. and stuck my finger in to check the oil level, it was full. if ida put anymore in it would have come out the hole. How could it leak and still be so full?? the whole underside of my bed is covered with oil and so is the outside of the axle, could it be something ealse leaking?? the liquid doesnt smell like fuel so I eliminated that problem but i did have a radiator leak but i doubt that antifreeze would drip down my driveshaft to my axle. Fortunately/unfortunately i am selling the truck and need to find this problem.

are you sure its the rear diff leaking ?? when oil gets hot it looks like there is gallons leaking and to top it off , the wind from driving down the road will move all kinds of oils and fluids around.
i trust what a dealership says as far as i can throw a bank vault. I never really had a pinion seal leak so bad it would run dry. You might have something else leaking and blowing back underneath.

I agree bilder12, a small amount of oil, trans fluid, gear oil, etc., when hot, can spread out and look like a big leak. If any of the fluid is before your rear pinion gear, it's probably not gear oil. The leak will be at or before the splattered area.

The best thing to do is clean of your under carriage with a good degreaser and check it a couple of days to see where it might be comeing from.
