Streetlight Question

Would/do any of you report problems with a streetlight so it can be repaired? How about if you spotted one on your way home that was out, would you leave it or report it as out?
My parents think that I'm crazy because I take an evening class, and on my way home, if I spot a light out, I don't hesitate to notify the electric company, but the way I see it we (through our tax dollars) are paying for these lights whether or not they are on, so might as well make sure they are running.

If it's in city limits, call the city manager's office to report the problem. If it's in the county, call the power company servicing that area. Just guessing.

I don't really notice when they're out, but if one was out persistently and I noticed it I'd definitely contact the county.

I think it's because they are controlled by a photo-electric switch and turn off when light hits it. My truck head lights have turned off street lights and I've heard of pranksters driving through neighborhoods shining spot lights on the street lights as they drive through shutting off all the lights. Them kids aren't right!.

Hopefully a street light is not as critical as a traffic signal, I worry about the lights that affect my own (and loved one's) safety.

If it were something like power lines compromised or water oozing out of the pavement there is a potential for immediate harm. I won't bother with phone books, it's 911 time. I'll let the pros restore the public's safety, that's why I gladly pay my taxes.

It's part of my volunteer job with the town...

I reported 4 in one night.

It gives the workers something to do

They are quite useful. Go into a neighborhood at night when the power is on. Then, go back when the power is off (just an example). You'll immediately see why we need street lights.

Just driving down major highways, when the lights are out, it's REALLY dark and you don't see cars stuck on the side of the road, deer running out BEFORE they are in front of you, things like that.

While I don't bother to report them, it is a "civic duty" sort of thing, so you're not complete off your rocker, ranger rules

well, rural areas don't have them nor do the interstates when you get out of town. and how many deer are in town? i think headlights would do the trick.

i understand having them in areas where lots of poeple walk like times square and other public atraction places, but all along some road in some bum hick area like where i am that doesn't even have a sidewalk, its a waste of money.

and if its for being safe, then the cities should be the most safest areas in america, but they are not.

i think they should do away with more streetlights, i don't like the light pollution it causes and the electricity they use.

bf250, you raise a very good point about light pollution.

And deer was a lame example. But when they were redoing the lights on the Long Island Expressway, and it was all construction so the lanes were all over the place, it was a much different feeling than when the lights were on.

Likewise, in residential neighborhoods, it's amazing the difference it makes when one goes out.

And I never meant true rural areas where traffic is so sparse it would be a HUGE waste.

bf250, criminals love the dark and stay away from the light. That's why you'll see more light in metropolitan areas and less in rural areas.

Of course, rural folks have more firearms and are more willing to employ them...
