engine swap newbie question here

I am picking up a 93 302 HO from a TBird and am swapping it into my 88 Mazda, and changing it to carburated. On that alone, emissions is not a problem around here. My question is, its coming with an AOD tranny and I was wondering if there was any wiring that would have to be rigged up, or could it just hook up?

the only wiring you should have to deal with would be for your neutral safety switch and your reverse lights which all you would have to do is splice them into your original wires... hmmm mazda it may not be tranny sensors ... but i dunt see why it wouldnt be

I'm not really much of an expert on automatic transmissions and usually try to avoid them, but from what I understand the later AOD tranny (actually called the AODE) is computer controlled. If you are set on using that transmission in a carbed application, there are kits for doing so that require a stand-alone computer to control the tranny, but I understand they're a bit pricey.

Check out this site for some AOD TV linkage info:

so I should be looking for an AOD instead of the AOD-E, correct?

That would be a better bet if you want an O/D automatic. I'm not sure what years they were available before going to computer control, but I've seen them as early as 1980 so I'd look for a mid to late '80s model.

Well, that chart only shows the AODE behind a 3.8 V6 in the T-bird from '92-'94, and shows an AOD as about the only other possibilty for '93 so you might be good to go.

I just pulled a roller 5.0 from a '93 'Bird a few months back, but I paid no attention to the tranny. The wiring on that thing was a nightmare, it doesn't have a stand-alone ECU/engine control harness like the Mustang, it's all integrated into the car as the computer runs virtually everything. So it's not a bad idea to go carbed for your swap, unless you were to get a Mustang or aftermarket harness. EFI isn't really that bad to work with, I'm going EFI in my Ranger.
