2004 - Auto Climate Control

My 2004 Explorer with auto climate control makes a strange grinding/creaking noise when it is first started (with the climate control on) in cold and/or damp weather. It sounds like its coming from the windsheild defroster vents. If I leave the climate control off when the truck is first started, there is no noise so I know its the climate control. It never happens in the summer or warm dry weather. At this point, there is nothing unusually wrong - the heat works fine so I don't want to have my dash opened up just for a noise. I am just curious if anyone else had this problem and if do, does the problem eventually lead to significant problems with the climate control that must be addressed?

My '04 has the manual system and it does this if it hasn't been started for 2-3 days. I think the vacuum system has bled off by then, and it's repositioning the door(s) to whatever the dash controls are set at. Maybe one of your doors has tight clearance and cold weather highlights it - JMHO.

I agree, I think it is trying to operate the vacuum doors before there is sufficient vacuum to do the job effortlessly.

I don't think it will grow into something serious, but if it stops or gets worse during your NY winter (we don't do winters here) then check all the functions of your Climate Control to make sure a door hasn't stuck in one position.
