The Wagner spray gun is the biggest piece of crap to come along in a long time. I tried to paint my house with it and it made a mess. It went right in the trash can! Thier ads are baloney!!
I have good luck with my wagner spray gun painting stuff on houses and painted my whole garage with it. The only thing I find misleading about their ads is how they run along side a window that is not masked off. It throws paint everywhere and there is no way to cut in around stuff without masking. But the wagner is definitely not suited for painting a car. Car paint is very thin with powerful solvents and like the other poster said, has to come out of the gun in a very fine spray to work. Envision painting your truck by taking one of those pump up tanks you put weed killer in, and spraying it with that. That is about what you would get with a wagner.
yuears ago....about 22years.... I painted my work truck with a wagner airless, I spent a lot of time preping ( of I washed the big clumps of mud off), and masked the important parts (windows, tires...) and sprayed it in a dust free enviroment ( ok, the back yard at 5 am), and the truck came out pretty good ( at least from 60 feet, or 60mph on the freeway) it looked good. The ironic part, when I was visiting in Idaho(last year), I spotted that old truck, and the paint was still intact, and looked pretty good.... I think it was Dupont auto paint, and paid like 25.00 a gallon....
But back to you question... yes it can be done, but dont expect a perfect job...
When you say wagner... are you talking about the sprayer that sound like a vibrating sander, with the quart canister, or a true airless?
I also had a Wagner electric vibrator ... um ... paint gun. My brother liked it a great deal and painted my sister's house with it. I looked ver good.
My experience was somewhat different - after an hour of frustration it lived up to the ads - "Cleanup is easier than you think." Much easier in my case, a short toss into a plastic garbage bag did the trick.
I suspect it depends on the paint viscosity and a few other variables. Get 'em just right and it probably works very well. Otherwise, you too may find cleanup easier than you think.
Sorry, I already cleaned up the one I owned and they only clean up once - at least the way I cleaned it. If you buy me a new one I'd be glad to do your truck for you. :P
