Oil Change

Hello All,

I'm planning on doing my first oil change on my '93 F150 XLT with a 4.9L. I just recently got the truck and I found that it was missing the owner's manual. A few questions: About how much oil should I expect to put in? Around 6-7 quarts? Also, what type of oil should I use? 10W-XX?? I'm also interested in changing the oil filter. Any recommendations?

Basically, any advice/tips that you all can provide would be great!! I just don't want to screw this up!!

Thank you all in advance!!

Hello

I have a 95 f150 w/ the 4.9 it takes 5 quarts of oil. 4 for the pan 1 for the filter. I myself use 10w-30. And on the oil filter, get a motorcraft filter, ive had problems with fram filters on this motor.

No offense but it doesnt sound like you change oil much. I normally do it when the truck is hot. Crawl under it with somethng to catch the oil. Take the drain plug loose, yes its gonna be hot. let it drain, then take the oil filter loose let it drain some more. After its all drained i check the oil plug for metal shavings and stuff like that. After i do that i put it back in (make sure its clean) and tightin it up. Then i have a friend, neighbors kid, ole lady, someone who has clean has to stick there finger down in a container of enw oil and put a good coat of oil on the rubber seal of the new filter and tightin hand tight. Then i normall take the oil filter wrench and give it a 1/4 to a 1/2 turn more. After i do that i fill her up with oil.

When you start it, DO NOT REV THE MOTOR, it is lacking oil in the system and you could hurt the motor by reving it. I normally allow the motor to idle for a few minutes before i take it for a short trip up the road and back to get it hot again, and check for leaks when i come back. I hope this helps have anymore questions just post back?

It can also help to fill the oil filter about 1/2 full before you put it on. Not too much, or you'll dump it all over putting it on.

The capacity (unless it was reduced) should be 6 quarts for an oil and filter change. I recommend a high quality oil filter (Wix, NAPA gold, Motorcraft, Purolator in no particular order) and a 10W30 oil should be fine. Hand tight on the oil filter is just fine and makes it a little easier to get off at the next oil change. Definitely don't forget to smear a little oil on the rubber seal on the new oil filter like kcw mentioned above, and double check to make sure the seal from the old filter isn't stuck to the engine before you put on the new filter.

kcw12, the owners manual says 5 qts. plus 1 qt. if changing oil filter for all engines.

so six quarts total is the correct amount.
