I have a 73' F-100 with a 302 swap mated to a 351 tranny. Love my truck. But I rebuilt it over the summer and let the carb sit over that time. Now for the last 2 months I've been fighting to keep the truck running. I've been told it could be the float in my carb, but it's a Holley II with what appears to be a good operating float. I've been told to bend the float upward a 1/4" and if fuel pours out the breather hose, the floats fine...that happened. Any other ideas? I'm gonna go buy another carb and convert to 4bbl. If it makes any difference, i removed my speedo cable cause it was torn in half, so there is no plug in the tranny...just a hole. Thanks a ton.
Have you changed the fuel filter? Was the carb keep with gas in it, and covered up? Witch gas tank do you have? I had one behind the seat and the pick-up tube had a hole in it about half way down, didn't want to run under half a tank.
Stock distributor, no mods. There's only the one tank, and to verify pressure I installed an inline gauge inches from the carb. The filter is down the line near the brake of the cab and bed. And the Holley II that's on it now I got from a buddy...I just replaced the base gaskets and the accelerator pump stuff. I have no other info on this one. And this is it...It high revs 5 seconds or so when you start it, then idles pretty ok then just dies. So, I've checked fuel pressure and float operation, firing order...it starts without pumping the gas so I know the timings not too far off. I'm just lost. I know the answer is gonna be relatively easy, just overlooked. Thanks for the recommendations, I'll check the electrical next, just in case.
First I've gotta say don't laugh........ My brother had a problem with a car, wouldn't run over 30 seconds, replaced anything and everything he could fuel related. To make a long story short he fueled it up at the house,was running good so he took it for a spin around the block, realized he left the gas cap on the gas can. He put it on and 30 seconds later it died. The gas cap wasn't vented and it wasn't letting the pump pull any fuel. Not sure if thats applicable to older trucks, never heard of it happening before but sure is better to start with a $3.00 gas cap and go bigger from there.
