One of the replies was older PSD are notorious for wiring harness problems and something about some o-rings and the I.P.R's and the H.P.O.P and the BR549's, just kidding on the BR's but what does all this mean?
Mine has 140K on it. I have only had it a month and I notice at times it seems to idle a little rough. Also when your driving, say around 20-25 mph it sound like the motor is surging????????
The truck is beautiful and has been maintained to the letter. But, being it does have some age on it Is there something I should do to keep from getting stranded or costing more down the road.

Since the truck is new to you change all the fluids. The wrong type of engine oil will cause the engine to run poorly. The oil MUST have the diesel rating. 15/40 for the warm temps and 10/30 for colder temps. Use a High quality oil ie. Rotella, Delvac ect.
Change the fuel filter and fill the filter housing with an additive, Diesel Kleen ect. Put the rest of container in the the tank(s).
Come back and let us know if your trouble is gone. There are other things that may be causing this but less likely.
As a preventative measure you should change the coolant (The coolant MUST be diesel rated too or you can use an additve from ford FW16.), tranny fluid & filter, tranfer case if you have one and the differentials too.
As far as the fluids are concerned its fine. I bought it from a family member. I have reciepts on everything that has ever beed done. Its got about 3K miles since the oil change. I was considering going to royal purple when I change it next time.
I changed the fuel filter last month when I got the truck. How often should I chage this. Also, I was told that lucas diesel additive is good to use. I put it in every time I fill up. In 4 fill-ups, both tanks, I went from 15.5mpg to 19.87mpg. Also, as I was told, after I put the lucas in the first time I was sitting at a red light and I could hear the engine get quiter. I like that stuff. It's supposed to lubricate injector pump and also the valves as well as clean the injectors. Should I still put a can of the Diesel Kleen in it?
As far as the "rough" idle, this is my first diesel and of course I'm used to a gas engine. Its not bad. Considering the truck probalby hasn't had 2000 miles put on it in the last 2 years before I bought it. I felt it was injectors and with the lucas they would clean themselves up with some driveing.
I did buy the red coolant, dex cool. But the parts store does not have the additive. I'm gonna have to stop at a dealer and pick some up.
I use Rotella synthetic in mine. Royal purple is really good stuff, I use it in my race engines (gasser). The Lucas is all you need, Diesel kleen would be too much additives IMO. I change the fuel filter every 3-4 oil changes, more if the engine idles rough or the WIF light comes on.
My 96 idles smooth when it's fully warmed up. Cold idle shakes for about 10 seconds, the synthetics are very good at smoothing-out the idle.
One more thing to check is the screen in the fuel filter bowl. I gotta look for the link, or someone else can chime in.
BTW: There is no injection pump. The injectors a fired with high pressure engine oil (HPOP)
