Well, I think in the near future, I might take the plunge and put a solid front axle in my '89 F-150 4x4. I've been doing a LOT of research online about the project, and I think I can do this IF I have the right donor truck. Which brings me to my question: everyone that does the SAS seems to be using a '78-'79 front axle, but will one from an earlier truck work? The reason I ask is I have access to a '72 F-100 (used to be mine, gave it to a buddy for parts...long story) and was wondering if there's a reason I couldn't use the axle from it?
Also, while I'm thinking of it, does anyone have any idea if the 9" rear out of the '72 will bolt right up to the rear springs in the '89, or would I have to cut and re-weld the spring mounts? I have a feeling I already know the answer since I know how my luck runs ....guess a little more welding won't kill me!
I think the 72 front is a closed knuckle, but I am not sure. If you already have the parts, I say go for it. Once the fab is done, then you can swap in a different axle later, if you want to. I used a 77 F150 front for mine. They have thicker tubes and are 1 piece, not sleeved like the 78-79s. As far as the 9", I think it will bolt up, but not 100% sure on that.
