Guys, i need some advice! I'm buying a 1985 ford f350 dually to replace my 79 f100. It has a 460 , & automatic in it. I needed the upgrade so that I can haul my racecar & family to the race track. I want to upgrade the exhaust after I buy it & I'm wanting some advice on what muffler to use & what size pipe to put on it? Also should I go dual exhaust or will a bigger single system be alright?
do you live in a emmisons testing state? if so you'll need cats, if you can get some big highflow ones.
on my buddys 76 f250 with the 460 he ran headman longtube headers, 2 1/2 inch true duals with a set of glasspacks, the truck picked up power all thru the rpm range.
anything you can put on it will be better then stock, on my 86 f150 with a 351 i cut off both cats [they were in terrible shape] and i ran 2 1/4 duals off the manifolds.
if your truck is setup like mine was there will be restrictive down pipes [smaller then 2 inchs on my 351] leading into a huge y piped cat, then thru a twisty turny odd ball sized pipe into another cat, then off thru a dinky main pipe in to a huge muffler, and then thru a bendy restrictive tailpipe.
if you can loose all the factory junk and start fresh, dual 2 1/2 or 2 3/4 or single 3 - 3 1/2 inch will be perfect for the 460. if cats are needed run some highflow like i said earlier, muffler choice will depend on how loud you like your truck and that 460 will get loud.
I am pretty sure that being an F-350 dually, the GVWR is over 8500lbs. which means no cats required. If you go duals, 2.5" is a good size. I run 2.5" duals with no mufflers through my stacks. The muffler you want really depends on how much noise you want to hear.
Long tubes, and single 3" would with a flowmaster or magnaflow will produce good low end. Long tubes and a 2 3/4 duals with a Cross over and same mufflers would also work out well. just comes down to cost and were you want the power to be.
For many years, I ran the stock exhaust manifolds and 2 1/4" duals on my 1980 F-350 4x4 400 auto, but once my engine is back in after a major performance rebuild including CHI heads, TMI pistons, roller rockers and Comp Cams 265 DEH cam kit, I will be running the exhaust through Sanderson 4V exhaust block hugger headers with 2 1/2" Y pipe to 3" single out to a 3" muffler and then 3" pipe exiting behind the passenger side rear wheel.
I'll save on the extra pipe, crossover, hangers, and additional muffler that way without any significant loss in performance through my 1,500 to 3,500 RPM driving range, and at 63, additional exhaust noise and Kool Duals are no longer got-to-have items.
sounds like a sweet setup pknute, for a 4wd that is a great setup, be sure to ask the muffler shop to tuck that exhaust as high up as possible. this will not only look better but protect everything more as well.
