My 53 effie has to sit outside under a car port for this winter, i tested the anifreeze and for one, its brown, two, it tested at -12 to -17 should i be worried about the water jacket cracking. Im never sure about my work squedule and i may not have the time and 4 to haul it to a garage and swap the antifreeze. Anyone with any info that could help would be much appreciated
Good thing you checked it, saves an even bigger surprise later.
Is it fluid enough to drain?
If it`s jelled then can you start it up, running for short spells till it liquifies enough to drain and put stronger antifreeze in. Be very carefull to make sure that you don`t over heat the motor.
If there is any antifreeze in the system it may just jell up so it probably won`t case harm but that`s very hard to say for certain. Better to try replacing the coolant before it gets really cold.
no its fluid and i topped it up before i tested it thats how i found its brown ran it for a bit to circulate the fluid. Thats kinda what i figured thanks guys.
Its brown? Sounds like its time to change the antifreeze. Its got too much rust in it, or did the person you bought it from put stop leak in to seal up some leaks. Thats what the brown could be.
I would still drain some antifreeze and top it up with fresh stuff, run the engine to get it mixed. It should be at least good for -30 , then no risk of freezing and a surprise later. But next spring I would look at changing the coolant or have it flushed so you have clean stuff in it. Brown is not good.
im gonna dump it tomorrow afternoon and change 75% of the rusty stuff. The rad is the original one but it has been recored in the early 90's before it was stored for like 10 years
How cold is it supposed to be tomorrow? I have done some fluid changes in the cold before and antifreeze is bad to do. Mainly because of how damn cold it can get!
im only swapping out half the fluid then topping it off again. Ill do a complete flush in the spring. Its not completely parked yet i have to be able to move it so my downstairs neighbors can move out at the end of the month. I just need to get it through the winter. Hopefully the roads get better we got like 15 cm of snow today.
Cold try changing a fuel pump that is hard to get at even on a warm day. It was around -35 and blowing took 2 hours to change due to frozen fingers. This was on an 83 Crown Vic x mountie car. One thing thou that car sure could move. It was my mothers, Got rid of it due the engine was smoking and the car was getting pretty rusty and there was lots of work needed. Broken front springs.
But changing that fuel pump was a pain that day. So -15 should be a peice of cake.
