motor on its last leg and making plans for new one, has anyone built any high torque 302s? i am thinking
9.5:1 compression
gt40p heads, truck intake portmatched
rollor rockers, towing cam, longtubes,
highflow cat for inspection.
have any of you guys tried combos like this?
what were the results
I built one for a friends truck. We used the standard crank, block, rods, pistons. Swapped the heads for the V8 Explorer heads (the best factory heads). Did some simple cleanup of the ports and cut the EGR hump out of the exhaust ports. Decked the heads .060. Used the stock cam but higher ratio roller rockers. Did some cleanup of the intake manfold. Used the stock exhaust manifold but did the high flo cat and low restriction exhaust.
It turned out very nice. Nice wide torque curve with excellent midrange and good top end. It does like 92 octane. I will probably do the same for my van if when the motor finally needs an overhaul. I may skip decking the heads so it runs on regular.
I would run a Explorer long block clone, or just pull a low mile Explorer motor out of the junkyard. Either way you want a roller cam and the explorer cam is really good for teh torque
