carboned up

My elderly neighbor has a Galaxie with a 289 in it and when she starts it up it leaves a black spot on her garage floor. It's not a smoker and her husband had it rebuilt a few years ago before he passed away. She drives the thing sparingly and never gets it out on the highway at all . Is there a way to decarbonize the motor without taking it apart? I'd volunteer to take it out on the freeway and open it up but I can only imagine her reaction to that suggestion. Steve

I would check the choke and the choke pull off, most of the time it's the pull off not working either stuck or it has a hole in the diaphram and the vacuume wont open the choke when it starts and the choke stays closed all the way.

Have her start it up and watch the choke linkage there should be movment once the engine has manifold vacuume

Thanks for the reply, I don't see a vacuum hose any where near the choke housing. I'm not familiar with that set up. This has a heat tube coming from the right exhaust manifold that allows warm air into the choke spring housing and activates a bi-metalic spring that opens the choke plate. I went ahead and shot the whole thing with some choke and carb cleaner and she says that it seems to run (idle) better. She was appreciative and insisted that I take $5 for my effort. I got a kick out of that. It almost covered the cost of the cleaner. Steve

it must be internal, so take the air cleaner off and look at the choke when it starts. It should be completely closed and when it starts it should open up a little.
