I have a 1987 F150 300 I6 2WD. The upper mounting bracket for the right rear shock has rusted apart. The frame where the bracket is rivited to appears to be sturdy. I inspected the left upper bracket as well, and it is nearing the end of it's life. I would like to find a replacement bracket, but the local Autozone has no idea....
Any ideas on where to find some replacement mounting brackets??
Don't know if you tried but I went to Ford for '93 leaf spring shackle and rear bracket replacements (~$75 from the dealer). Both sides rusted through, rear leaf springs almost went through the floor of my bed. I had to air chisel the remains of the spring brackets off of the frame. Strongly recommend an air chisel. Replaced the rivets with Grade 8 bolts. Used alot of locktite for that safe feeling. No problem 50K later. HTH.
Many Thanks for the replies! I called the local Ford dealer, and to my dismay. they had a set on the shelf! They only charged me 13 bucks a piece. Wow, I feel lucky today.
Anyway, I cut off the old rivets and drilled out the holes to accept #8 bolts. I installed the new brackets and a new set of shocks too (The factory shocks were still installed!) I replaced the bottom bolts with new ones as well.
After examining these brackets, it is quite obvious why they rust so bad. The bracket acts like a bowl once it's mounted, catching everything that goes by.
The shock mounts have been made in this stupid way since the 70's. My 78 F100 had the frame rust through here because of that type of engineering brilliance.
Well, there is now a hole the size of a quarter in the frame at both locations. I suppose most of the water and muck can now escape through these holes!
BTW: The air chisel was a BIG help with the old rivets.
