I just want to vent for a second and then ask for some information. The two last months of summer that my auto engaging hubs failed to engage....no big deal that is something that I can live with. Now that the cold is up-on us here in the Southeastern Ohio area, I have now noticed that I have NOTHING but defrost. So first thing that comes to mind is that their is a vacuum leak. I checked the pump and it is just running constantly to the point that it was getting warm when I placed my hand on it. I began tracing things down and stuck my head in behind my drivers side front tire and guess what I see to my horrific surprise? NO VACUUM tubing. Their is a piece laying on the frame rail and that is it.....it goes absolutely nowhere into the wheel well.. WHERE IS MY TUBING GONE?
And that is not all........
I transfer my looking to the left side wheel well area and to my surprise I find a grungy peice of hose with a split end just dangling and a completely rusted to the point of flaking upon touch nipple type connection on the truck.
THIS SUCKS.
But the 7.3 itself is running great. 25 degress, not plugged in, started with NO smoke.
The good news is all you have to do is replace a couple of small sections of vacuum tubing and you get your auto hubs and your heater back at the same time.
I found the same thing on my 2000 Ex 4WD and the total cost to repair was $4.28 tax included. Took only a few minutes to replace the hose. The hose is subject to cracking and age not to mention water and heat from the engine. Just routine maintenance to change the hose every 3 or so years will keep the 4wd running. Don't forget to clean and lube the hubs also. Jim
