I was wondering if anyone has done a frame off restoration to a 1986 F250? Mainly I am looking at the general cost for restorations and specific fixes to improve aspects of the truck. I am looking at improving the towing and off road ability of the truck.
Most of the work I plan to do myself. I have done two Jeep frame off restorations before.
ok ... theres alot of things to consider.... how big of a lift are you going if you plan to lift it.. how big of tires...... how serious offroading are we talking... like ... serious abuse.. or just weekend abuse.... theres many different ways to go about this.. i just frame off restored.. a 84 f-150 ... which is my daily driver/serious off road with lots of abuse.... give me some ideas.. of wat your gonna do with it.. or question you might have... .... im very confident i can help.. you with wat you want to know
There's not a whole lot of money involved in getting the frame back to "new". There's probably $100 in bushings, $60 in u-joints, $80 in shocks. . . If you replaced absolutely everything (leaf packs on all four corners, shocks, all u-joints, bushings, body mounts, good brake job) you're probably looking at about $1500. Leave the springs alone and you can knock at least $750 off of that.
As for driveline, if it's all in good shape and nothing needs rebuilt I don't see why you'd have to spend over $2200 mechanically (that's chassis back to spec, all fluids, set of decent tires).
I did a Frame off Restoration on a 1986 F-250 last year. It was some job, I did it with my father just on weekends. I went all out on this thing. I spent over 14 grand, was not planning on doing it at first, but one thing leads to the next and before you know it you spent alot of money. One thing I would advise you to do is get your prices together first. Get a bunch of catlogs, make some calls, assume you will be paying more than you think. There will always be something that comes up. I also saved alot of money because I painted it myself. If you have a professional do it it could be pricey, especially if you go all out on the paint job like I did.
