More info please. What light is flickering? Also, did you not have the alternater tested before replacing? Any other things going on or just recently?
Are you talking about the red battery light on the dash? Mine was going off and had the alternator tested and it was bad. Put a brand spankin new one on from Auto Zone (gold series or whatever...the one that is all brand new and not reman)
The battery light was still flashing after a couple of days....took the alternator back and had them test it and the new one was bad. All they had was the reman so I got the difference back.
Take the truck to auto zone and have them do a test, its free. These alternators have to pull 12 volts or otherwise that light will come on.
Mine just did that saturday night. I have an "oh-rye-lees" alternator in it and I just figured I was going to need another so I ordered a motorcraft. Funny thing though, when I checked output it was at 14.5v and I have not been able to make the light flicker again.
This all happened after jumping a friends car. I gues the alt couldnt handle 3 bats.
The red light that looks like a battery....Funny you should say auto zone that is where I got mine a brand new one. Sounds like I am going back there today
Had a similar problem, new alternator and batteries but light still going on and off mostly on. One of the wires in the harness to the alternator had the insulation rubbed off in a hard to see spot and was grounding out.
Well, I still have not seen my light flicker again since saturday. I am just gonna wait to see what happens since I got such a good reading with the dmm.
My original went bad, got a new high-dollar one from Advanced Auto, light started flickering a few days later, they tested it, tested good, I insisted on a new one, hasn't flickered since, now I don't trust their tester.......
Mine did it then i replaced the alt. My batteries then decided to go bad because i drove on a bat light for the first day. So if you think your alt is bad just get it check fast before you screw up the bats.
Can you tell me where abouts that wire is that was rubbed off. Also can a bad battery cause this problem
After replacing both batteries (one was going bad) and the alternator the old boy at the alternator shop knew which wire in the harness was bad by testing at the connection to the alternator but couldn't find where the wire had been damaged (didn't want to start tearing things out of the way to find it). I ended up at the dealer but it was just $80 to fix, didn't ask where they found it at though.
Any auto electric or battery shop should be able to determine if you have a bad battery, alternator or this type of wiring problem at little or no cost, the cost is locating the problem wire.
Just an update on mine, my battery light had not flickered in over a week. The other night it started flickering again and the lights would dim pretty low every time it would do it. I put the new alternator in the next morning and it has worked like a champ. Funny how the one I took out still tested good on the bench. I think it was flaking out after it would heat up.
I am having the same problem with a 2001 F-350 V-10. All the lights flicker while the truck is running - dash, dome, clearance, head, tail, etc... Even the voltage gauge on the dash bounces to the same beat. Almost like there is a pulse in the lighting circuit. It's very consistent...not like a short or bad conection.
The truck has a new alternator and Battery. Both have been swapped for testing purposes and nothing changed. Although when you unhook the battery while the trucks running, the flickering stops. This is very interesting....but only puzzled me more, because 2 alternators tested good....but didn't fix it!
I'm wondering if I should try an alternator from a different company?
Is the Ford (motorcraft) one recommended??
Or is it the just the difference between New and Reman that is important?
Also, does anyone know what the minimum voltage is needed for this truck to function properly?
