shorten the box
i would like to shorten the box on my 53 f-100 about 3 inches.i have never done this before and would like feedback from someone who has.my plan is to measure 3inches from the back of the truck and saw all the way around and then weld a flat piece of steel across where the tailgate was. my tailgate is badly damaged and the top of the bed rails are to. i like the look of a really short box and a completely smooth tailgate. if this sounds like a dumb idea or way harder of a project then it seems please let me know.

might be real neat. should just require some decent welding skills, and some carefull planning and measuring. is the bed itself bad, or just the rails. are you sure you want to shorten the rear of the bed, or do you want to shorten the front. had a 59 1 ton that had been shortened to pull trailers, had to shorten a short bed to fit. had to do both ends on it, fenders just barely fit. looked real cool.

I have shortened a '41 one ton box but I had to deal with the deco on the side, for the modern boxes it would be easier, just taking off the stake pockets and the bottom support, cut the bed to desired legnth and spot welding them back on. If you still want to weld a peice of metal back there purchasing a bed front peice would be an easy shortcut than to fabricating one from scratch. The front would be about the same, only you would have to modify the suspension to get the wheels in the right place.
