Hi guys, need some help! I will start tearing down my engine and getting ready to pull my 460 from my 1979 2wd truck and want to know the correct way to handle that monster. Will need to pull the trans also. It it safe to pull both together or do I need to pull separate? Also, do I need two or four points of contact on the motor to the lift. I have a two ton lift but no pull bar that has the crank on the end to tilt the engine when pulling it. Do I need this bar to do it efficiently and above all SAFELY? And how far do you need to strip the engine before pulling. It will be a complete rebuild thru a machine shop so all I need is the block in the end. Thanks, Tom
I tend to pull the carb, dist, and front end accesories (PS pump, Alt, etc) when pulling a motor mainly to keep those things from breaking. 2 mounting points is enough, I even pull my engine with just a bolt in each head on alum heads and never had a problem. When I pull them it depends on what my plans are if I pull motor and trans or just the motor but either way works fine, if a manual sometimes it better to pull both because lining up the clutch and input shaft while trying to install the engine can be a bearcat.
ive taken the total front end out when pulling and installing, when your on your own (no Help) thats the best way that I was able to do it alone... Dont have to do much to get it out together with trans still bolted to block
