Lightbulb Orig. Radio

Does anyone have info on "rebuilding" or "converting" the orig. radios for these trucks. I wanted mine to be easy to service in the future, run on 12 volts, be reliable, and maybe pick up FM stations all while remaining to look stock. Is this possible or is this impossible? Thanks in advance for any and all info

There are several radio "gurus" that advertise in Hemmings that can convert your radio over.

Look thru the section..."Services Offered."

I need the radio to be the stock 53-56 ford radio (Round face with ***** on the front for volume and power on) JC Whitney sells newer add on (cut up dash) radios. I have never seen a reproduction of "our radios" out there..... HAS ANYONE ELSE?

Funny thing you should say that... I just got my ne Hemmings in the mail and opened it tonight to look at the "Radio Guys". Was just wondering if this is something that I could do my self (save time and money).

Thanks for the heads up

The 56 radio was 12V neg grd. They show up occasionally on ebay. The radio's were two parts, the in dash part and the main part that was under the dash, so be sure you get both pieces.

There used to be several 53-56 truck guys in the San Jose area...they sold mainly at swap meets.

There's also several Ford truck parts obsolete places in NorCal.

Some Stock Radio Info

Mid Fifty has a orig. copy of the radio repair hand book. They faxed me a copy free (its 3 bucks by snail mail) This ill help with a regular restoration, but if you looking to do a update as I am...... we will have to look else where. As fr the speaker grille..... that and the tubes are the hardest parts to find. (luckily I have a complete radio)

Let me know if the paper work from www.Midfifty.com helps you at all.

if you are doing an FM conversion you don't need the underdash box of tubes. What they do is put an FM radio inside the old radio and use the old *****, etc. I think there is a switch to go from FM to AM. I used to check a site that did the conversion but I can't find the address now, do a search for it.

There is an old timmer listed in Hemmings, and maybe my Y-Blck mag. Cant remember his name off hand. He told me he would do the oval faced 6-volt to am/fm hi-fi for $450.00. Converting to 12 volt also.

One company that does radio conversions is S&M Electro-Tech in Blaine, MN ~ www.turnswitch.com.
Someone on another list used them and was satisfied with the finished product.

Aren't these in three pieces?

The speaker mounts above the inside mirror, the brain box is under the dash, and the dial mounts into the dash with cables leading to the brain box.
