Closed Cell Foam Sources

I just posted a comment about insulation, and thought I'd ax as to where you can get "closed cell" foam?

I know that you are not supposed to use regular open cell foam in areas exposed to moisture, but I can't locate a common source of the closed cell stuff.

Thanks,

Paul

There's those blue foam pads for camping. And someone in another sound insulation thread said that Home De(s)pot has a closed-cell foam carpet underlay that's intended for basements.

I don't have any personal experience with them, but hey, it's a source!

Paul, what are you using it for, and how thick do you need it?

I agree with angus! about the camping foam pads. I used them in a car i did years ago and they worked real well. Sprayed glue on the back and stuck um in.

No special desire for me to use it now, just for info.

Thanks a lot for the websites info!

I thought you could get it in spray cans.

You can buy polyurethane foam in place spray insulation. You have to be careful with it tho, it sticks to EVERYTHING (can be a good or bad thing depending on situation) and is near impossible to remove residue, it grows quite a bit as it sets up and continues to grow in lesser amount for quite some time if exposed to heat. As it grows it will exert a surprising amount of pressure, enough to blow panel seams apart or bow house walls, never use it in a confined space. It sets up rigid with very little to no flexibility. It will deteriorate if exposed to UV so needs to be covered if used outside. Once you start a can you need to use it all or throw away any leftover in the can, you cannot save it for later, so it is not economical to buy the large cans unless you have use for that much at one time.
Did I mention it is VERY messy and hard to control????

Thanks for the info, AX. I'll stay away from the spray version. I can see it now, driving down 81 to the Supernats and my panel roof blowing off!

If you used it on your panel roof, it would end up looking like the inside of mamoth caverns with stalagtites and rock formations on the roof and floor!

Man, that'd be awesome! I'd pay to see a truck that looked like that inside. Not much, but I'd pay!

I'll bet someone will read this and do their panel up this way, just to be different.

Rubber Mats or ??? - Not sure what we're all looking for but I've got $0.02

I did some research on rubber/foam recently and the type that is the kind to use in many or nearly all situations is going to be called EPDM. That's the short name for the chemical rubber name. EPDM is usually black however I did see white one day.

MD company which makes insulation sells it at many stores like HDepot, ACE, Lowes..

You can tell it's EPDM if it says, good to -40F as far as I can tell by experience.

Also the EPDM is a very excellant mixture of rubber product. It is used not only for weatherstripping but for roofing and other high exposure weather resistant uses.

I'm a retired analytical chemistry guy. It was great to find out about EPDM.

One article I read said that Silicone is better for the weatherstripping application. However it was a 'looking ahead' article and I don't think silicone is readily available as a weather stripping , yet. But silicone IS a great product too.

It's just that things like vinyl or other plastics / rubbers are no where near as good from my research as EPDM. There is no other common name for it as far as I can tell.

If you want more information please feel free to PM me.

EPDM comes in closed cell foam, as well as solid (or very tiny cells) and I don't know
much more about the forms it comes in except from what I've seen on the shelf.

If you buy the MD brand you can search froogle for the best prices. I found it at
Home Depot in 17 foot x 1 " wide strips for $8.25. It comes in other sizes too of course. That was the best value for the most material. It so happens I can slit that piece and I think use it for door weather stripping on my '56 F350. But don't take my word for it yet. I only think I can do it. I've not tried yet.

I have a document that's about 2 pages long of my research which includes links and notes for epdm. If you'd like it just pm me.

As always if anyone is wanting any kind of help with electronics, batteries, sciences of any kind, chemisty,
or research help I'm glad to assist. Just PM me and ask away!
Andre

EDIT: Oops. it looks like I didn't read the post very well. Sorry.
Well you learned something eh? About me. I don't read well.

Ok so the closed cell foam pads. Hmm. The EPDM IS very resiliant.
And the type used on roofs should be killer strong.

If you plan to put it down and put your foot on it I think that
you might want to use the kind of mats you find for reducing foot
fatigue for standing all day. They tend to be expensive.

The stores that have them are often office supply types. If you have a goodwill store and other thrift stores you can ask them to hold them for you if they should come in. Other ways to save money buying them is to
check out google then froogle for fatigue reducing floor mats.

Let us know how the exercise works out. OK? !
