Remote Starter Installation?

Has anybody installed an aftermarket remote starter on their truck? I'm thinking about purchasing one for my '05 truck but not sure if the installation is something I can do or if I should hire it out. I'm familiar with wiring in older vehicles but don't know my way around much under the hood with all the electronics...

Most of those pro installers can have it done faster than you can think about it and they guarantee their work. They have diagrams telling them just exactly what wire to connect and where.

The unit would have to have very very good specific instructions for your vehicle before I would try it. The newer vehicles have all these anti-theft devices and special keys with chips in them. You have to do something about all this since you want the truck to start automatically without the key.

So what is a good price for an installed unit? The dealer quoted me $495 installed. That seems excessive since I can buy the system from the aftermarket for less than a 100 bucks but then finding someone to install it is a problem. I live in a small town and there are few places here that do this kind of work. I saw an ad from another town not too far from me for $199 installed. Does that sound about right?

$200 installed sounds like a pretty good deal if it is a quality unit. I installed mine myself on my 2002 SD. Paid ~$50 for the unit (ebay), and it took me about 6 hours to put it in. I took my time though, double-checked everything with my diagrams before I cut it, and soldered all the connections.

At $200 installed though, I would have been tempted to go that route.

Scott,

Wow! Six hours? There's no way I'd consider spending six hours doing that. I'll pay the 200 bucks...thanks!

BTW, I called the place and they told me they needed the truck for a half day so I guess it takes them awhile to do it too.
