Tire Weight Issue

I have a 2003 Explorer with th 3.55 rear end, and it needs new tires. I could put the Michelins back on, as they were really good but I found that the sidewalls were soft and got really chewed up off road. So I would like to get tires that have tougher sidewalls. I am looking at the Pirelli Scorpion ATR's, which weigh 35 pounds each, and the Firestone Destination A/T, which weigh 31 pounds. The Michelins weighed 29 puonds each. What are the effects of putting heavier tires on your vehicle, and of these two tires which would you choose?

The over-all effect would probably be a harsher ride on regular streets. The softer sidewalls have a cushioning effect. The fact that they are lighter means less un-sprung weight. This means that the manufacturer can use softer springs. How much difference you will feel, if any, is something you will have to experience for yourself. Remember, NTB has a 30 day ride satisfaction period.

Forget the Destinations.. go for the Bridgestone Dueler A/T.

Much better tire, but larger price as well.

Firestone/Bridgestone also have the 30 day test drive program.

Good luck
