I've got an 88 F-250 and I'm having some trouble with the tranny. It seems to get confused shifting from 2nd to 3rd. It hunts back and forth between the gears at about 45-50 mph. Once it's well into 3rd its fine and it kicks down alright but if the speed drops down to the point where it wants to shift into 2nd gear it kicks back and forth between the gears. I do all my own maintainance work and always have but I don't really know much about auto trannies. I did change the fluid and filter and changed the vacum modulator but none of those helped and it does seem to be getting worse.
Thanks in advance for any help, Kevin K.
Did you adjust the band?
If so, how?
Is the fluid level correct?
You can turn the small screw inside the modulator.
This will increase the shift point speeds.
The fluid level is correct. I did adjust the modulator a bit. It was shifting pretty hard and I backed off on the screw 1 turn. It softened the shifts a bit but didn't help with the shift problem. I did'nt adjust the band and don't know anything about doing that. Could that be my problem?
Can anyone reccomend a good book to help me out?
Thanks, Kevin K.
Is easy.
On the left side of the transmission just above the lever there is an adjuster.
Use a 5/16" open end wrench to hold the adjuster and a 13/16" box end wrench to loosen the lock nut.
Back the lock nut off several turns then tighten the adjuster fairly snug with the small wrench.
The proper torque is 10' pounds. Or 120" pounds.
Now back it off 1 1/2 turns.
Hold the adjuster and tighten the lock nut.
Count the turns in to compare it with the amount backed off.
That jam nut is a one time use item as the sealant on the bottom will not reseal and cause a small leak in the future. If the adjustment works then get a replacement jam nut and install. Hard part is to not change the adjustment while replacing the nut. Last time I looked on older C-6 specs the nut should be torqued 35-45 ft/lbs.
