Oil Filter question?

I currently have a 1990 F-350 with a 7.3L IDI. I changed my oil and filter today. I took a sugestion on installing the larger Power stroke Fleet Guard filter (model#3630). I have a couple of question:

How tight do you install the filter? It looks like the direction on the filter show to go 1 -1/2 turns after the gasket first contacts. I did this, and it was hard to get it 1-1/2 turns. Should be fun to remove.

Is this filter too long for the IDI? I noticed what I asumed are my brake lines were very close to coming in contact with the lowest part of the filter. These look like they may start rubbing on the filter, and that cant be good. Any ideas?

The info re tightening is correct I use a filter wrench for install and removal. There must be a problem with your lines mine have good clearance.....but it's a 4x4.

I'm thinking I might be missing a clip that would keep the lines tucked into the horizontal cross member of the frame.

My lines are inside the frame channel at the filter location, but mine is also a 4x4.

It does take a good filter wrench to get the filter back off, but it is easier to get the long filter off than the short one. They both need 1.5 turns tighter after hand tight to prevent leaks. Cheap filter wrenches will not get it back off.

dave, mine is a 4X4. do you know what holds the lines in the frame rail? Also, I couldnt find a filter wrench big enough, and if they were big they looked like they could break. I ended up getting a Craftmans strap wrench at Sears and it worked good. Who makes a good Filter wrench?

Blue Point (snap on) makes a real nice filter wrench that has a flex handle since I have had many oil leaks I tighten mine with the filter wrench.. and I have two of them for the stubborn removal.. but its been years since I have had a leaker..

i like to use the socket type filter wrench that snapon sells, its fully asjustable, and has a 3/8 and 1/2 in drive on the socket, works very well, i use it on the cummins L10 and M11s at work!, heres a link http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item....store&tool=all

I have broken several filter wrenches over the years, the one I have right now is about done for after several years of use. I got it at a heavy truck parts store, it came from either a NAPA truck parts dealer or Fleetpride, I can not remember right now. I also have a strap wrench that is my backup just incase.

Doesn't anyone make one of those "cup" types that fit on the bottom of the filter with a ratchet hole in the bottom? I haven't removed the filter on my IDI yet. Would that type even work - assuming you could find one big enough to fit?

I have an old one somewhere that is like two shallow channels about 4" tall and 3" wide. They are attached to each other by a geared base with a ratchet hole in the bottom. As the ratchet is turned in the hole the two shallow channel pieces move towards each other gripping the sides of the filter.

The harder you turn the ratchet the tigher it grips the filter. Kinda' hard to describe exactly how its made and how it works, but it works really well.

I haven't seen it lately but I'm gonna' have to dig it up and see if it will open wide enough to use on the filter for the IDI - and whether there would be enough room to use it if it does.

If the Fleetgaurd filter is made like the OEM Motorcraft filters, it doesn't have the finger grooves on the bottom end of the filter that the cup type filter wrenches engage. So the answer is no, a cup type wrench won't work.

I also have one of the self adjusting wrenches like the one that you described in my collection. Mine was made by Snap-On but is for smaller filters that the Motorcraft #1995 filter. I use a strap wrench that is driven with a ratchet on mine.

If you look closely, you can find many tools sold under Snap-On's Bluepoint brand name can also be bought under the Lisle or KD brand names at auto parts stores at a considerable savings. The Bluepoint tools are sold by Snap-On, but made by various companies.
