I have a 1992 idi with 229k on it. Should I plan on replacing the injectors in the near future, or do they last longer than that. I know I have to replace the o rings on the return lines because the leak bad. also, do they have performance injectors for this truck?
If your truck doesnt smoke at idle even when warmed up, and your milage is still acceptable keep the injectors in the truck. I replaced mine at 240K km due to idle smoke, when tested out of the truck, they were not pop testing anymore, just a steady stream of fuel- which is hard on milage. New injectors are so cheap now if you buy them on line, if your going to actually pull them out of the engine, just replace them with new or rebuilt.
They are also suppose to pop closed when the fuel pressure drops to a certain piont. Worn out injectors open sooner, and don't pop closed as they should either, resulting in a jet of raw fuel rather than a good atomized spray. Thats why worn out injectors smoke at idle, unburned raw fuel, poor fuel economy. At least this is my understanding of the workings of the injector and what I have experienced with my nozzle test rig.
Sounds about right, KJLYPW. I just finished changing mine two weeks ago, and I took the old ones back to the injection shop as cores. The technician there pop tested three of them as well as a new one for comparison; the difference was unreal. Mine were original with 320,000kms on them, and the fuel just ran steady out of them; the new one had a good sharp 'pop' to it and the fuel came in short pulses. I noticed the difference in sound in my truck as well. Of course I changed the IP at the same time, so that might have been part of it too:-) Lots more power than before.
