Welcome to FTE! This forum is for introducing yourself. Your best bet would be to click FORUMS at the top left then scroll down to the 400 engine forum. You will get some help there. Enjoy the site.

First thing first is the distributor. Just have to ask the obvious question, did you use the 460 distributor or the 302 distributor? The two have a different geard that run on the cam. The 400 uses the 460 distributor gear on the cam.

What part # do you have of the commander series? It should be long and start with a 9. I went to the holley site, and they have instructions there. But there are a lot of different commander systems. The one I picked was for a big block chevy, and required a crank trigger for the ignition.

The first thing I would do is take the MSD box out of the system. Wire it with the Ford dist and the stock coil and see what happens.

You didn't hook up the yellow wire did you? They say it will blow the computer up if you are using a MSD and use the yellow wire too.

I have one of these on my 390.

It sounds like it's in the wiring. I would go back to Holley's instructions, and follow the wiring diagram found on page 101, figure 75. Double check the wiring if you've already done it. The instructions should have came with the system, or can be found here:

http://www.holley.com/data/Products/...99R10149-7.pdf

For a test you might want to leave the MSD out of the system and wire it up like they show on page 100.

Assuming that doesn't work, double check the wiring, paying special attention to grounds and power connections. Leave nothing to chance.

There is also a little relay that needs to be plugged in to a connector on the wiring harness; it's easy to forget that.
