4.2 Questions

Hi, I just have a few questions about my truck. I just recently purchased a 4.2l 2000 F-150 5 spd. Love the truck. Is there any set of headers i can buy for the truck? Also...which motor do you guys think has more potential...the Ranger 4.0 or 4.2 F-150? Really appreciate you guys help

i don't know about the headers, never replaced them, but i like the 4.2 better, my friend that have the 4.0 actually get about 1 or 2 mpg less than i get with my 4.2, i think it is a great engine, it lacks a little on the low end torque though

I know you can get headers for it, I would look at some of the perfomance links on this site, or do a search in the 4.2 forum. I own both the 4.2, and the 4.0.I believe the 4.0 has more get up and go, mated to an automatic, than my 4.2. Mileage is about the same for both, but the truck is full size compared to the mid.But I sure perfer peddeling my F150 around anyday compared to the Explorer.

Summit Racing has headers for the 4.2, they run over $400 however. As far as engines go, I have had 2 Rangers (1 ext cab, 1 reg cab) with 4.0 5spd's, and I now drive a F150 with a 4.2 5spd. I love my F150, I think it has great power for what it is, but I have to say, my Rangers were much better engines. The 4.0 ran smoother, and felt better through the rpm's. Where as my 4.2 feels like it struggles to wind out and feels very coarse as it is doing it. I think the cam in the 4.2 is designed for a very broad torque range, and it is a truck, not a hot rod. I get about 16-18 in my F150 and thats about what I got in my Rangers. That being said, after having a F150, I dont think I could go back to a Ranger, this truck is just the perfect size inside and out.

If you dont already have a lot of upgrades the headers wont help you that much. The more mods you have for your truck the more the headers will help. I would take the full size truck over the midsize any day of the week!!!
