i had a 1971 3/4 chevy 4x4.....loved that thing, one of the best looking trucks ever made, but really impractical to drive everyday, especially long trips, but it does great in the mud..

one thing i would them is....what in paticular sucks about ford? or do they not know enough about automotives to actually say anything worthwhile?

ford has the best selling truck in america, millions can't be wrong.

or you can just ignore the immaturity and breath a sigh of releif when you finally get out of school and get to be around more mature and educated people.

Well, ask him why GM uses the junky feeling interior trims that fail prematurely. And why the stick with annoying things like seat mounted shoulder belts. How Does GM sell the Sub since the '30s, yet when Ford mounts some competition in the form of the Excursion, they are pilloried? And why does GM lose market share, just like Ford, only more? Ford has problems and has pulled some foolish stunts, but GM has troubles too. Ask anyone who has been nickle and dimed by their Hummer or Tahoe etc.

To stick with "the other brand sucks" shows you are dealing with a punk who hasn't learned to think. Tell 'em so.

just tell them you are in the class to learn how to be the best mechanic you can be, so when you get out of school, you can go to work in the GMC dealership, cause everyone knows that GMC stands for GOT A MECHANIC COMING.

I used to have this in my sig; "Chevy's are like opinions, every a hole has one."

Don't get me started, I'll get sensored, at best.

Heh.

Ask him how many fuel pumps he's replaced. If he says none, just use that thin arrogant smile and say "you will." Trust me, at some point, he will. GM fuel pumps suck, and when they go bad, it's a royal PITA to replace them.

Think of it this way. They get to watch your one vehicle for problems. You, on the other hand, have 13 vehicles to make fun of. It's just a matter of time...

Working on a GM product is just like workin on a Ford product. Both brands had thier high and low points. I'd say that in 1/2 ton trucks things are pretty well equal for any given year. Both companys FWD cars are essentally rolling garbage. GM's automatic gearboxes are better than Ford . But the Ford 2300 4cyl and the 300 I6 are amoung some of the most durable engines EVER.
I find GM wiring and engine MGMT systems to be a bit eaiser to work with than ford (Both being lightyears ahead of chrysler). Ford always had a better AC system than GM.
Now one thing I've noticed against FORD is they are usually first with really retarded engennering from a service point of view, only to be copied by GM a few years later. EXAMPLE: In bellhousing clutch slave cylinders and "quick" connect fuel fittings.

Any "instructor" who rails against Ford when there is a company called Chrysler corp in buisness onviously has no concept of what he's instructing.

I don't have a problem with Chevy's.

I drove an S-10 High Country for a few years and thought it was a decent truck. Had a crappy off-road package that even my '83 Ranger with the worn differential could beat. Too bad too, it was a nice looking rig.

I drove a Chevy Cheyenne for a while on the farm and I loved that truck. It was beat all the hell, but given a choice I would have bought it off the owner and restored it. I bet he still drives it on the farm today.

Of course all that said I still drive Rangers, exclusively.

GM built very good trouble free vehicles up through the 60's.

It's been a long down hill slide ever since.

Trying to link up with Nissan had everything to do with acquiring modern technology, where GM is way behind today.

Their OHV (cam in block) engine design dates back to the 1940's...and the 4 speed auto to the 50's.

Their passenger car line looks modern...but in fact, the Impala, LaCrosse and the Pontiac whatever are nothing more than reskinned 1996 models.

The Buick Lucerne and Cadillac DTS are updated Olds Auroras from 1993.

The pickups, outside of being reskinned...haven't been updated much since the 1980's.

GM..once the industry innovator...has become a copycat...taking the best features from the competition, and adding them to their next new models.

Sad.

Ummmmm.... I don't think it's all that clear-cut really. Right now- today's products- GM seems to have an edge in passenger cars and big SUV's, while Ford's strength is in trucks.

OK as far as I know GM never had anything to do with Nissan, But a Mercury Villager on the other hand.....

Their OHV (cam in block) engine design dates back to the 1940's
And when it gets better milage and has more power than more "modern" engines (as is the case now) who in the world would care.

I completely agree with you here.

Dude have you been livin underneath a rock, I don't think you could even use the nuts and bolts from an 80's gm truck on a new one the models are so diffrent. A new Chevy truck has about as much in common with an 80's model as it has in common with a new Ford

I traded in a chevy silverado for a new Expedition 5.4 4x4 fully loaded.BIG MISTAKE! DOnt get me wrong I like Fords but Chevy trucks/suvs have better styling more power(gas) and better MPG. My Exppie only gets 10 mpg in town,12 on the fwy!! Thats a
far cry from the 26 fwy,18 city that my silverado got. I like Chevies and I like Fords. I dont like Dodge or imports.
