I know this is a shot in the dark but here we go. I bought this van about 20 months ago, the guy I bought if from did not keep any maintenance records. There were oil change stickers (Shell Rottela T). From what he told me his son-in-law was/is a diesel mechanic and did all the major work for him, you can see the radiator, fuel tank, and return line are new. The coolant looks great; the overflow container isn’t even stained brown, got all the right additives, starts great even below zero when not plugged in, etc.
To get to the point I don’t think this is the original E40D transmission. I didn’t think that they painted the transmissions at the factory and this one is a vary dark gray color and looks to be fairly new compared to the rest of the truck – I’m trying to find out if there is a tag on the transmission that would indicate if it’s been rebuilt and by whom. Also if I drop the ring gear inspection cover is there a number on the torque converter or will the color of the torque converter tell me anything as far as what it is - if it's unpainted, black, purple, etc… I’m thinking that I can track down the re-builder and find out what updates have been done???
The guy I bought the truck from retired and move away so I can’t ask the question(s) I probably should have ask before I bought her…
Original transmissions are not painted. Some rebuilders do paint them, so that one is almost certainly a rebuild. Same for torque converters, Ford does not paint them.
