1990 302, when I start up, one lifter (and/or valve) ticks and quickly corrects in about 5 seconds. I had this problem before which I posted here and switched my filter and so on. It seemed to work for a while, but now it taps quite obviously. The tapping disappears within 5 seconds. The oil is full, the filter is recent.
Question is: How do I figure out which lifter is hooped? I do NOT want to change them all when only 1 is bad, and I do NOT want to change the cam-shaft if only 1 lifter is off. It may be that the cam lobe is worn, but then why would the tapping go away?
The info here is great and I appreciate any insite.
Sounds like an oil delivery problem and not a lifter problem if it goes away that fast. Does it do it if you restart a warm engine? If not and your using a Fram oil filter try switching to a Purolator, bet that stops it.
Yes, it does not tap when I re-start a warm engine, and yes, it is a Fram filter. But if it was a delivery (or Fram filter) problem, why does only one lifter tap?
Your lifter might be dirty and sticking in the bore. Try running some lifter clean in your oil and see if it helps. In the old days we used to run a quart of ATF with the oil but I don't know if it is still recommended. The lifters have a tendency to get varnished up,especially if the engine doesn't get up to operating temperature. I hear the guys on the forum really like Sea Foam. You might give that a try. Good luck.
