Hard to start cold

Hard to start cold
84 ranger 4x4. Float bowl empty as well as fuel lines. Carbed engine. prime the carb she will start and die. do this about 4 or 5 times than it picks up fuel and will run. No fuel in oil no leaks in lines. no leaks at pump. What ya think?

Well nobody seems to think to much about this. But thats ok cus there is a lot more cooler problems going on her than mine. Just wanted to get a few more input's on weather or not if the mech pump is at fault. or something else . I have a 200 mile trip to town tomorrow on logging roads. would like not have to buy a pump if thats not what i need. Any thing apreciated and thanks for the help.
