I have a 1978 Ford f-150 ranger, 300-6, 4 on the floor, 4x4. It has been out of inspection since August because it will not pass. The reverse lights don't come on. I'm wondering if there is a switch on the tranny and where is it? I've checked the bulbs and the wires don't look worn... So before I start digging around elsewhere I thought maybe you guys could point me in the right direction.
Well if it's an NP435, and I'm assuming it is, the backup light switch is in the tower on top of the transmission. The floor plate over the transmission has to come up to get to it. The PO of my truck had disconnected it for some reason, and I had to take up the filthy floor mats, take the plow controls loose from the floor, and take up the cover to get to it to plug it back in. Took five seconds once I was in there. GRRRRRRRRR........
But other than that, those taillight sockets are notorious for going bad and/or losing grounds, so maybe you want to probe the wires at the sockets before you go look at the backup light switch...........
Of course this assumes you have already checked the fuses
