Just installed a 351W RV cam and lifters in my early 302. Used cam lube on the cam and lifters. Changed the firing order. It fired right up and seems to run good. Now...I've only run it for about 5 minutes, not to full warm up. I seem to have one or two lifters that are still clacking. Will that go away, or should I suspect a problem? Thanks.
What heads are on there? And how did you set the valve lash before firing it up ? You also have not run it long enough to break in the cam and it's entirely possible you may have screwed the pooch as far as wiping a cam lobe or two now.
Stock D0OE heads from the period, and none-adjustable "rail" rockers. Plenty of cam lube.
The clacking began right at first startup. I shut it down immediately. But after I wrote the above, I went out and did the standard break-in (holding various rpm's for a set time). The clacking went away pretty quickly, and it seems to run quite strong and smooth now. Sorry for bothering the board with the question!
Good luck with it, you're not out of the woods yet with the cam. Give it a couple thousand miles before pronouncing the cam break in successful. Too much cam lube is as bad as not enough. Too much and you run the risk of the lobe not gripping the lifter bottom enough to get it spinning in it's bore. Change the oil immediately after cam breakin (first 20-30 minutes) then again after 500 miles. This goes for the filter too.
