Yes but I need to know what the year of your truck is.
There were two different glow plug systems used on the IDI.
83 thru 86 was the old system
87 thru 94 was the new system

Disconnect the white wire from the controller and tape it up. Run a new wire from the terminal the white wire was on, to a push button switch, and then to a good ground. Be careful not to push it for too long, and also watch who drives the truck understands what to do to start it. What kind of GPs are you using?

When you say controller do you mean the relay?

Yes you are right. They are together, but the relay is on top. I thought I had a picture but can't locate it. Maybe Dave has one.

You should. You have the later style. What colors do you have?
Go up the page to Dave's post. Click on his name then click on his gallery. Then mods and diagrams. There is a picture of the controller and relay there. The picture I thought I had was actually his. (thanks Dave). Does this look like yours?

The white wire comes out of the controller under the relay.

Do you have power to the battery terminal?
Do you have power to the ignition terminal when the key is in the ON position?
Is the black ground wire attached to a good clean ground?

yes its the same but my wires are diffrent colors where the white one is on that is yellow there are two yellow. but i hooked up the switch to that post and when i turn it on the switch lights up and there is a buzz and my tack goes up to like 500 and sits till i turn the key on. then if i turn the key on first then hit the switch nothing no voltige drop or anything. i ran a wire from the post to the switch and then a ground wire from the switch thats it does this sound right or do i need to also add a power wire. thanks.

seanvicious, you can control how long you have the gps on rather than having the controller control it.

Hilljackusmc,
Sounds like you have the ground wire from the switch attached to something that is not really grounded. There is a lot of plastic under the dash and screws that are not really grounded except through something else. Sounds like you may be going to ground through the instrument cluster, which could be bad.

You need to remove the wire in the white wire position and tape the end.
Attach a wire to that terminal and run it into the cab to a momentary switch and attach it to one terminal.
Attach another wire to the other terminal on the momentary switch and run it to a good ground.

With the key in the off position when you turn your switch on it lights up?
Since there should be no power on the small terminal across from the ignition terminal and your only other connection to the switch is to ground, where is the power coming from to light the switch?

Something is not wired correctly.
With the key in the OFF position, the only terminal on the relay that has power is the battery terminal.

With the white wire removed from the relay when the key is ON a test light will show power on the battery terminal, the ignition terminal and the white wire terminal. The relay will not close though.
Now take a wire and ground the white wire terminal and the relay will close for as long as you ground the white wire terminal.

Only use a momentary switch to do this, a regular switch is to easy to accidently bump ON which will burn up the glow plugs.
Also the key must be ON to heat the glow plugs when wired correctly.

There are two different glow plug systems used on the IDI diesel, the way you wire the old style will not work on the new style system. The reverse is also true with a new style wiring on an old system.

Old style you run power to the relay, new style you provide a ground for the relay.
