Ok guys, I have changed coolant temp sensor and thermostat and the gauge still doesnt climb very far off of cool. Im noticing now that the top rad hose isnt building very much pressur im going to get a new rad cap tomorrow and if thats not it what else could it be? clogged rad? bad water pump? I dont want to just start changing stuff before I ask some advice. thanks much for any replies.
Did you change the ECT or the sending unit for the gauge? There are two temp sensors. One is for the computer.
Rad cap, thermostat, and a cooling system flush is where I'd start. I doubt it's the water pump, but if there are many miles on it, I'd probably change it anyway.
I just changed my water pump today. While it has at least 200k on it (as compared to the engine which has a hair over 400k) I was heading home the other day, then heard a loud "clang" and my temp gauge immediately spiked all the way to the end of the gauge just as I was pulling in. Clangs are an alarming sound.
Anyway, after taking the old water pump off I discovered that the impeller flung itself off somehow and punctured the thin backing plate. Weird. New pump solved that problem, and now my temps are right in the middle where they used to be several years ago.
As far as temp sensors go, to get back on topic, there are two. The one on the side of the intake manifold is for the EEC to know when the thermostat opens. The sensor hanging off the water neck is the one that drives the EEC for true temperature, as well as the gauge on the cluster.
Both sensors are the same, electronically and mechanically, though on some trucks the connector has the "cant put the connector on backwards" tab in a different place.
Perhaps it depends on year, but my truck uses one two-wire temp sensor on the passenger side of the manifold for the computer (no sensors after the thermostat), and the other, single wire gauge sender is on the driver side.
Thanks for the info guys I didnt know there were two sensors I changed the one on the water outlet will change the other tomorrow. As for the pressure a new rad cap has seemed to fix the problem. thanks again guys
