O/D Light on & off, blinking ect.

Hi all! I have a 96 Explorer 5.0 V6 4wd, 270k+ on it. Started a few months ago when I would push the o/d button on the end of the shifter to shut it off and the light wouldn't come on in the dash to signify that it was off. That lasted about 2 weeks and then it went back to normal and and would work right--now the whole time when I shut it off or on I could see the rpm change so it was technically still functioning. Our last trip to Idaho, on the freeway the o/d light started blinking, got to gas station, shut the rig off and when I restarted it, everything was back to normal. light functioned and had stopped blinking, well now almost a month of it working right, it now doesn't come on at all now matter what. I am baffled, I still see the rpm's change when I turn it on and off at hwy. speeds, but I am concerned that there's still something going on other than a burnt lightbulb.BTW why can't it EVER be the CEL burn out?? LOL fighting EGR codes on it too--but I think I have a handle on that--already replaced the EGR and now onto the DPFE, Thanks to the forum
